Sri Lanka’s capital city of Colombo, often described as the ‘Garden City of the East’, is well known for its charming lakes, canals and tree-lined boulevards, busy open-air markets, temples and colonial buildings. Contemporary Colombo has vibrant upmarket shopping, excellent restaurants and a thriving art scene, which brings us to The Gallery Café, Colombo’s most loved restaurant and once Bawa’s architectural studio. Established in 1864, The Galle Face Hotel is one of the oldest hotels in Asia, and is an iconic landmark on the Galle Face Green. Over the years it has hosted many notable characters, enhancing the much-loved institution’s rich traditions and compelling stories. It exudes colonial grandeur, and with a romantic air of faded elegance, there is no other hotel in Colombo that has quite as much charm and character. They say in Sri Lanka the cars driver on the right hand side while Tuk Tuks (or  trishaws) drivers drive in the shade, you can easily hail a metered Tuk Tuk  from the road side to explore the city.  Go for local rice and curry or check out the new Yoga and healthy cafes like Cafe Kumbuk for fresh food like fresh local mango and halloumi salad with a blended juice or king coconut water Thembili (Sinhala: තැඹිලි).

HOSPITAL STANDARDS AND ACCREDITATION 

Continuous quality improvement is an essential element of medical services quality improvement process. Hospital Accreditation is a beneficial approach for Sri Lanka and Malaysia’s medical services and public health. Such significant innovation can stimulate health care service providers to focus on the systematic work flows for quality services rendered to patients and their relatives apart from the development of the body of knowledge, skills and technology according to professional standards.

The Hospital Accreditation process creating collective organizational commitment of quality improvement, organizational analysis, self-assessment, strategic formulation of the organizational development planning, human resources development, teamwork and service systems focussing on patient-oriented mindedness. Toward this end, personnel at all levels are encouraged to participate in such activities which are organized in the overlapping fashion in order to create cross-manuals, as well as clinical practice guidelines and care map. Functional teams are formed to benefit from opportunities to improve patient care and service processes.
Quality improvement activities and the publication of a guide to the hospital, clinical practice guidelines and care map have been undertaken in collaboration with nurses and all personnel of the hospital and the faculty.

Quality improvement, by using the Hospital Accreditation approach is a concept and practice that yields beneficial results to patients, customers, hospital personnel, the hospital, the Faculty of Medicine, the society and the country as a whole. Nevertheless, quality improvement processes and human resources development, which require time and dedication from all parties in improving working procedures, work system and organizational culture. Quality improvement needs to be continuous.
